Radiology

Department

RADIOLOGY is a medical specialty that uses imaging acquired by different equipment to make diagnoses and, where necessary and applicable, treat diseases seen within the body.

Radiology Department may also be called the ‘X-ray or Imaging’ Department. It is the facility in the hospital where radiological examinations of patients are carried out, using the range of equipment listed below.

There are 3 well trained, qualified and certified professional staff with variable experience in the department:

  1. A Chief Consultant Radiologist who is the in-charge of the Department.
  2. Two (2) Radiographers.
  3. There are three (3) other support staff in the department.

The Radiology Department currently has the following state-of-the-art equipment:

  1.  General purpose X-ray machine
The x-ray machine uses radiations (electromagnetic waves) to create pictures of the inside one’s body. The images show the parts of the body in different shades of black and white. This is because different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation,
  2. Digital Mammography machine
This works the same way as the general x-ray machine but at a different energy level.
  3. Ultrasound scanner: Equipped with 3 standard probes for optimal function.
Ultrasound is used to create images of soft tissue structures such as gall bladder, Liver, kidneys, pancreas, urinary bladder and other organs of the body. Ultrasound can also measure the flow of blood in the arteries and veins to detect blockages. Ultrasound testing is safe and can be performed many times by experienced personnel without any danger.
  4. Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner will soon be added to our armamentarium in due course.

Since the hospital is a multi-clinic centre we attend to all the various disease conditions referred to the department from the different clinics and wards. We also attend to patients from other hospitals.

  1. General X-ray services which include but not limited to:
    a. Chest X-ray for routine entrance medical tests and for patients with chest diseases.
    b. X-ray of the bones, due to trauma or any suspected bone disease of the head, limbs or spine.
  2. Mammography:
    a. Digital mammography to evaluate for diseases of the breast e.g. lump in the breast, breast discharges, etc.
    b. Screening mammography is also available for the appropriate age group of the population.
  3. Ultrasound services: Ultrasound scan services which include: i. General body scans for liver, gall-bladder diseases. Assessment for renal (kidney) diseases and obstetric and gynaecology, small parts etc. ii. Specialized and focused scans e.g. endocavity scans, follicular tracking, colour Doppler to assess for adequacy or otherwise of blood flow to various organ systems of the body e.g. Carotid artery study to assess for risk of stroke in adults.
